The Electronic Drum Project

I have done earlier posts on this this, but this one is a less brainstorm, and more conclusive entry on what I did with these electronic drums.


I first made and installed the electronics (aka a contact mic I made from piezo speakers from Radio Shack) into the drums, similar to this site. I used wood and screws and foam, but just get them close the head area and wired them to a TR 1/4" female jack. I also made mesh heads like it says here. Note- next time I do this, I doubt I will make my own heads and buy some mesh ones online instead. See pics above.

here are some pics and video from a live set I played at the Replay in Lawence KS on 12.22.09. It was the first sighting of my electronic drum set that I built. I had a 3 piece trigger set, another single trigger hooked up to a 12" Jane Fonda Record that only made a gong sound (and I only hit it with a gong mallet to be dramatic), and the usual arsenal of midi controllers, delays, and feedback paraphernalia. All in all it was a real fine day. Also to note, I had a flight out of town for the holidays the next morn at 7am, so given the driving time to the airport, having to get there early, and the fact that I didn't leave the club until 2am, I didn't go sleep. Yet, it was still way worth it. On a side note, I was working on this kit in the warehouse that we turned into a club after the cops shut us down. Funny story about that place, some dude killed himself in that warehouse by running his car. After the club was finished, I worked on some drum building there, usually alone pretty late at night. Freaked me out.

Note to anyone other than me that may read this- this is my centralized thought location for this project- I take all of my little notes and ideas and slam them on this page so I don't have them on 3 thumb drives, 5 sticky notes, and a liquor store receipt. It may not make sense, but it will soon, or at least be helpful to me if and when I do this again.

Projects- most in process

Ludwig Jr. Kit-
16" Kick (slightly damaged inside), 8" Tom, 10" Tom, all pinstripe heads, using my Mapex set hardware,
-needs a snare (once I build the 13" snare, it will go on my Mapex set, and then the 1969 Ludwig snare will go on this kid set)- needs a snare stand, needs it's own tom arms (uses big boy drum hardware, not jr. stuff).
